LAKE HURON PRIMARY WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM BACKUP GENERATOR

History

The Lake Huron Water Treatment Plant currently has a single diesel generator capable of providing approximately 3.5MW of emergency power to the facility during power outages. This level of generating capacity provides a pumping capacity of approximately 110 million litres per day, or about 70% of an average winter day demand.  Growth in the system, treatment reliability, lack of fuel efficiency, significant maintenance and operational requirements, as well as the increased frequency of regional power outages, has created a requirement for increased on-site generation capacity.

Project Description

Since the requirement for the water treatment plant is for standby power / intermittent use, this project involves the installation of four (4) generators each having a (rated non-continuous) capacity of 2.5 MW allowing for more flexibility during operations, fuel savings and ease of maintenance.  Electrical and building upgrades to the existing generator building and electrical service are all deliverables as part of this project.  The proposed power generation equipment is sized to provide reliable system operation during a power outage incorporating cost effective technologies.

Funding for this project has been provided by the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario under the Building Canada Fund and the HELP Clean Water Initiative.  The HELP Clean Water Initiative is a partnership between the Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System, the Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System, and the City of London to seek senior government funding for specified projects which have regionally significant impact to the water supply systems in this region of Ontario.
